a HEALTHY BODY

Distances are meant to be travelled.

A few years ago, I watched a commercial that had a lot of people mesmerised. Great images accompanied by addictive music made a compelling case for high performance and the price one has to pay for trying to reach goals and dreams. I watched it many times, but the reason why I could not stop watching it was the end of the commercial. It all built up towards the slogan ”It is what you do in the dark that puts you in the light”.

If we were to believe that “every living being is an engine geared to the wheelwork of the universe”, we would gradually become aware of how every action truly causes a reaction in everything we do. ‘’Pick a flower on Earth and you move the farthest star” might be a prime example of ideas iterating how everything is more or less linked together. “All is one’’.

”Though seemingly affected only by its (every living being’s) immediate surrounding, the sphere of external influence extends to infinite distance.” In other words, the minute we are born, we become part of something ineffable and, should we choose to keep walking and reaching high, not even the sky is the limit. We dream and we aim, but human energy can hardly have the projected impact without our ability to cover the space and time of our existence by way of the body.  So, like any other device and machine, we need to take care of our means of transportation. We need our body to be healthy in order for us to travel the distance of our lives towards what we think we can do.

What makes a healthy body? There are so many factors and circumstances we cannot even influence in life, let alone controlling them, but if we are lucky enough to have been endowed with good health, we also have the responsibility to safeguard the blessed conditions of our existence, committedly maintain our health and thoroughly train our body. We all know it is always easier said than done, but the discipline required to find the individual formula applicable to our uniqueness is available to each and every one of us. All it takes is a series of questions and one decision.

Do we choose to treat our body with respect and nourish it well or do we take it for granted? Do we honour the gift of health before it is lost or do we end up regretting not becoming aware of its irreplaceable importance sooner? Do we realise on our own how much we need ourselves to independently travel in search of our calling or do we get taught the values of a healthy body by family, friends, doctors, survivors, etc. ? Do we choose to become dynamic achievers or just sedentary thinkers?

DaVinci’s quest for understanding the hidden meanings of the universal truths underlying the beauty and harmony of the natural world has also produced the well-known figure of the Vitruvian Man. As other symbols of the Renaissance, this drawing of the embodiment of health and fitness suggests a concept of ideal body proportions. Ideas to follow and myths to interpret have always been part of humankind’s journey through the timeline, an integral component of our evolution, but it currently becomes more and more clear that there are no precise formulas for general health and we owe it to our uniqueness to look for the ways that apply best to our individual needs and purposes of bodily health.  Are the perfect proportions of a body the best indicator of a truly healthy body? Examples of perfectly trained fit athletes suffering a heart attack while competing and seemingly unfit people achieving great feats of survival can make attractive cases for great comparative debates.

We are all different, therefore, the ways by which we employ nutrition & physical exercise and endeavour to achieve longevity must reflect our very own individual nature. We must try and  pursue the freedom of following our dreams towards fulfilling our destiny with determination and vigour, chemical balance and oxygenated harmony. Create your own balance! Prioritise, plan and execute! Adapt, adjust and overcome! ”You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it’s better to listen to what it has to say”. It’s better to keep it beating healthily.

We must go the distance.
